Homemade Fabric Softener

I have had many requests from people wanting to know how to make your own fabric softener.  I have previously posted how to make your own laundry detergent and how we do laundry in the country (hint:  we do not use a washing machine).  Anyway, here is how I do it.  Let me tell you, it is VERY, very simple.  I love how soft my clothes come out and they smell so lovely too.

Homemade Fabric Softener

6 cups of VERY hot water
                                         3 c. white vinegar
1 (16 oz.) bottle Suave Refreshing Waterfall Mist conditioner

homemade fabric softener, homemade laundry detergent, how to wash clothes in a tub, frugal recipe, frugal living tips,

You can use a different scent of conditioner but I have always used Suave and this scent.

Mix the conditioner and the hot water together and stir until the conditioner is completely dissolved.  Stir in the vinegar and mix well.  We store ours in a 2 liter bottle but you can use an old fabric softener bottle or whatever you have lying around the house.  Just be sure to mark the bottle accordingly.

Add the mix into a Downy ball or just add 2 T. into your rinse cycle.

  6. We make our own fabric softener as well. My recipe is made up of vinegar, water, baking soda and a 100% pure essential oil of choice. Usually I use orange or lemon cause they are cost efficient. Your recipe sounds good and easy to whip up as well as inexpensive. I like that. Thank you for sharing at WJIM. Have a great week.

    2. I actually get my oils at the moment from Sprouts. The NOW brand is pretty affordable and 100% pure from my research. I'm looking into DoTerra as well.

  9. I'm trying to make this right now!!! Really excited about it, I live overseas so getting comfort products like fabric softener can be a bit pricey. Conditioner can be too but I think it will end up being less expensive :) Thanks for sharing! Does the vinegar smell lessen once it cools?

  10. You might like to try what I have made for yrs now ...extremely inexpensive and good too.
Because this is so cheap I tend to buy my favorite real softener.... but for yrs bought the cheapest softener I could find.

Mix I large bottle of your softener of choice (approx: 3 L)
1 large bottle of vinegar (here its a 4 L)
Mix these 2 in a large bucket then add the equal amount of water (7L)
You end up with 14 L ( a little over 60 cups or 3.75 gallons) of softener which you only use 2-3 TBs per load (in a machine)
We always had soft and lightly scented laundry. No static either.

  11. Very interesting! Vinegar has so many uses, but this is a new one to me. Like that you can control the scent too, as I have people in my family with sensitivities to strong odors, and fabric softener is one of the worst! Thanks for sharing :)
